Edmond Engel (B. 1937, Switzerland)
Edmond Engel was born in Angers, France but has lived in Switzerland since he was a child. Deprived of a family environment by the death of his mother, he began teaching himself to paint and draw. As a young man, Engel traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East. In 1965 he was married and soon had two daughters.

Jean Dubuffet spoke of Engel’s art saying “[it has] a passion to which I am drawn very strongly.” These remarks encouraged Engel to continue to create. Today Edmond Engel is a prolific artist. He has written poetry and commentaries for some of his drawings, which were collected and published as two books titled We Could Go, But Where? and We Are Born From The Stars.

Edmond Engel has displayed his art internationally in galleries since 1968. Several of his works have been included in major museum exhibitions such as The End Is Near! at Baltimore’s American Visionary Art Museum, an institution designated by congress as the repository for “the best in original, self-taught artistry.”

Engel’s work is also included in Jean Dubuffet’s own Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne, Switzerland.
