Gerard
Cambon (b. 1960) Gerard Cambon is a self-taught artist living and working in Paris creating evocative constructions composed primarily of found materials. In 1992 he started to collect and insert different materials into his models by including found materials such as wood, leather, and old iron, as these objects incorporated a natural patina into his work. Most of his materials were found in the south of France where his family maintains an old farm, barns and a small winery, although he is always in search of new objects, tools and fragments that are old and display discernable signs of previous use. In 1994 Cambon began to create “locomobiles” and bas-reliefs and presented them to the public at La June Peinture, a Parisian arts fair. He describes these two forms as complimentary. The locomobiles express the joy of movement, the freedom of dreams and escape, while the bas-reliefs function as a release from his feelings of confinement and detention. The bas-reliefs are dark, thick and dense. They are meant to represent everyday difficulties and the impact that society has on everyone. Even if they seem afraid, mean, belligerent or lost, the figures within are not desperate or hopeless. They may be looking outside from within but they are curious and interested in the world. Gerard has described the process of making the bas-reliefs as peaceful and private. Only once that the private little worlds are created does he begin to introduce the figure. |
